Tips For Remote Home Monitoring

Posted on: 21 July 2017

Monitoring your home remotely is a good way of detecting teething problems before they blow up into calamities. That gives you the opportunity to intervene and save your house whether from a burglar or from a fire outbreak. Use these measures to maximize the benefits of your remote monitoring security investment:

Invest in A System with Multiple Integrated Sensors

Ideally, your remote monitoring security system should not just monitor a single threat. There are monitoring systems designed to detect multiple threats, which means they have multiple sensors. For example, if you only focus on burglars, your house may be destroyed by fire and you won't be able to stop it in time. Here are some of the common sensors that an ideal system should have:

  • Motion sensor to detect intruders
  • Smoke sensors to detect small fires before they flare up
  • Freeze sensors to warn you when your pipes are about to freeze
  • Water sensors to warn you of water leaks

Maintain Separate Networks

If you aren't careful, then your security system may become more of a threat than a deterrent. For example, hackers can get into your home network and steal your passwords or even monitor your movements. This is a real threat if you are operating with a single network for your home security, computer, and entertainment systems. Therefore, keep these networks separate so that when a hacker gets into your entertainment network they don't automatically get into your remote monitoring network.

Watch Out Who Has Your Passwords

Many times, people think their networks have been hacked by clever cyber criminals while in the real sense they have just been careless with their passwords. Don't give your friends your passwords, write them down where others can read, or save them in your phone books. Even if you want someone to keep an eye on your house while you are away, let them do it in such a way that they don't need your security password. It is also dangerous to take pictures of your home security system and share them on social media sites, you can easily give other people the means to get into your house if you do that.

A smart home security system is as smart as the person using it. Therefore, make sure you learn how to use your system and always set it up before leaving the house. Tell your homeowner's insurance company about your state-of-the-art security system and they may give you a discount on your premiums; some insurance companies do that.
