Tips to Help You Insure Your Motorcycle

Posted on: 28 May 2019

When you own a motorcycle and plan to ride it on the roads, it must be covered under an insurance policy. What do you need to know about motorcycle insurance? What coverage do you really need? Here, you'll find a few tips to help you insure your motorcycle and stay within your budget.

Consider the Value of the Motorcycle

Before you get your insurance, you need to consider the value of your motorcycle. If your motorcycle isn't worth much, it might not be necessary to add collision or comprehensive coverage—you may only need to carry liability insurance to protect you in the event of an accident. Liability insurance covers damages done to other people's property, but it will not recoup any costs associated with your own property.

Take a Safety Course

One of the best ways to get a discount on your motorcycle insurance is to attend and complete a motorcycle riding safety course. This course can be found for free in many states and only takes a few hours a few days to complete. Unfortunately, the classes do fill up quickly, so it's something that might take some time to get into. Join the mailing list for the safety course near you to find out when the classes are being offered and become alerted when there are openings.

Don't Get Tickets

When you're driving or riding on the roads, follow the law – the more citations you receive, the higher your insurance premiums will be for both your motorcycle and your vehicles. If you do get a ticket, go to court and plead for leniency—lots of times, the charges will be reduced so that it won't impact your insurance—unless you were being completely reckless.

Pay for the Year in Full

You will have the option to pay for a year's worth of coverage in full—some insurance companies offer a substantial discount when you pay it off at once. If you can't swing the full payment, set it up so that the payment can be automatically paid through a checking account or credit card. When automatic payments are set up, you can sometimes get another discount.

Contact insurance agencies such as Ahlquist Insurance and discuss your options. You'll probably be pleasantly surprised at how affordable motorcycle insurance is—especially if you ride very little each year- you may even qualify for another discount if you keep the mileage low each season.
